The walkway along the promenade is covered; a tin A-frame roof supported by heavy square iron poles. That’s for the typhoon rains, and the summer sun. I leaned on a pole waiting for my ferry tonight, and a man almost bumped into me as he rounded it, walking backwards. He seemed annoyed I was there, but walked on wordlessly. He circumnavigated the next one too. I counted him doing it 27 times, only ever facing backwards, before the curve on the walkway hid him from my view.
